This fellow Isaac Newton sure was on his game back in 1687 using his theory of universal gravitation to officially determine what caused tides to occur twice a day. This rise and fall of large masses of water are a result of the gravitational interaction between the moon and the earth, creating an outward bulge on the ocean in the direction of the moon.
